I’m going to keep this short. It’s a simple thought. One that scares me and at the same time enlightens me. What do you do when Chief Editor and founder of a renowned, generally anti-establishment, pro-women publication is arrested on charges of rape?
You sit dumbfounded. The anger seeps in and you unleash the fury within you. You let your verbal and physical protestations run riot. You let the disappointment of it all fuel that anger and then finally, you unburden yourself of the guilt. The guilt of being a man. You breathe. The violence subsides and suddenly the steely-pointed tip of truth punctures your bubble. Your mind starts haemorrhaging thoughts, until one makes sense..
If Tarun Tejpal can’t keep it in his pants, we are looking at this all wrong. Up until now, we all thought that these people who have crossed the line and sexually harassed women must have been philosophical illiterates. Men who have a warped concept of women. Men who have grown to think of women as property. But, Tarun Tejpal is different. He’s pro-women and was very vocal about it in his magazine. Has spoken countless times on the rights of women. His close associate, Shoma Chaudhury, has been one of the faces of pro-women defiance in the face of goons and goondas airing perverted sense of the birth-giving sex of the human race in India. So why?? We all thought the answer was – “Attitude to women must change”… No, women must change their attitude to men. The world of chivalry and basic civilized conduct has spun away into the distant past. It’s time there was a social revolution. I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again : These men have been birthed by the same sex they deem inferior with their actions. Some logic that is.
